Name Origin: Goldstone is a type of glittering glass made in
a low-oxygen reducing atmosphere. Another common name for the material is
aventurine glass, based on the original Italian name “avventurina” (from
avventura, "adventure" or "chance"). It is also sometimes
called "stellaria" or "sun sitara" (sitara =
"star" in Sanskrit) for its starry internal reflections, or
"monk's gold" or "monkstone" from folkloric associations
with an unnamed monastic orde.
Historical significance/folklore:
There are a few lore
stories about the origins of goldstone. The first is that sometime during the
early 1800's, an Italian monk was making glass at his monastery. He
accidentally spilled some copper filings into his molten glass and, voila, goldstone
was born. The recipe for making goldstone was kept secret by the monks, but was
handed down through time.
The second story also takes place in Italy. This story goes
that a long time ago, molten copper was accidentally spilled into molten glass
at a glass factory in Murano and accidently created goldstone.
The third story, is that goldstone was created by
alchemists. One of the many problems that alchemists tried to solve was how to
turn iron into gold. Goldstone is thought to be the result of one of these
attempts. The original manufacturing process for goldstone was invented in
seventeenth-century Venice by the Miotti family, which was granted an exclusive
license by the Doge. Persistent folklore describes goldstone as an accidental
discovery by an unnamed Italian monastic order or medieval alchemists, but
there is no pre-Miotti documentation to confirm this.
Gemstone properties:
Red goldstone is associated with
vitality and energy. Blue Goldstone is associated with learning and
communication. Goldstone is said to be the stone of ambition. It builds energy,
courage and a positive attitude. Increases drive and confidence.
Healing properties:
Goldstone also has many of the
metaphysical properties of copper, including strengthening the circulatory system,
strengthening bones, and easing arthritis pain, which is felt to be extremely
helpful in increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation.
Goldstone is said to be a Master Healer, stabilizing
emotions and aiding in staying calm. Goldstone,
is used as an energy generator and like diamond, is a good deflector of
unwanted energies, therefore is a protection stone. It reminds us to set goals
that are lofty and work to attain them. It Goldstone is effective when you are
sending healing energies from the heart, throat or third eye chakras. It is

ReplyDeleteMy new favourite :D
So Gorgeous! I have a carved lion that has lost its luster and is dull, how is Goldstone polished? I would love to bring the brilliance back. I took a soft toothbrush and dawn dish detergent thinking perhaps the piece was dirty, it seems to have lost polish.

ReplyDeleteOne good option is to take it to a jewelry store that offers jewelry repair, and ask them to have it polished. They might send it to their gem polisher, or they might know of someone. Good luck!
