Kunzite Crystal

Kunzite Crystal

Kunzite gemstone (Uparatna) was first found in California, USA. It was found in the year 1902 A.D. This Uparatna has been named after George F. Kunz. It is usually found in large sizes and up to eight carats. Good quality and colors are not found in smaller sizes. Hence, this Uparatna is usually used in bigger sizes as ornaments. Light pink colored Kunzite is cheaper than Green colored Kunzite. It loses its lustre if it is kept for long in heat or direct sunlight.
Pink colored Kunzite is believed to give positive results regarding love affairs. This Uparatna has also been considered to give benefits when gifted to a lover. It prevents love affairs from getting bitter and makes a person patient. This Uparatna is also known as Spodumene.
Kunzite was discovered near the beginning of the twentieth century, in America, named for it's discover, the gemologist G.F. Kunz. And although it does not have a very long history, it's effectiveness has been tried and proven.

Kunzite is a form of Spodumene, which occurs in a wide range of colors, although the most common color is the yellow gray (which is called triphane). Two other gemstone varieties, the lilac-pink kunzite (colored by manganese) and the bright emerald green hiddenite (colored by chromium) are very popular with collectors. The kunzite was named for gemologist G.F. Kunz who first described it in 1902; hiddenite is named for W.E. Hidden, who discovered it in North Carolina in 1879.

Spodumene was discovered in 1877 in Brazil, although it was not until 1879 that kunzite and hiddenite were recognized as different varieties of the same mineral. Spodumene is also found in Madagascar, Myanmar, the USA, Canada, the former USSR, Mexico and Sweden.
Mohs Hardness of 7 with a monoclinic crystal structure.

Kunzite is strongly pleochroic, which means that there is a color intensity variation when a crystal is viewed from the top or bottom then from side to side or from other directions. The top and bottom of the crystal reveal the deepest colors and knowledgeable gem cutters will take advantage of its effects. Due to kunzite's cleavage, splintery fracture and strong pleochroism it is considered a real gem cutters challenge. However, its beautiful pink color makes kunzite an attractive and desirable gemstone.

Spodumene is an important source of lithium for use in industrial ceramics, mobile phone and automotive batteries, medicine and as a fluxing agent. Lithium is extracted from spodumene by fusing in acid. Spodumene is also an important flux in glazes used by ceramic artists, especially Shino glazes.

World production of lithium via spodumene is around 80,000 metric tons per annum, primarily from the Greenbushes pegmatite of Western Australia, and some Chinese and Chilean sources. Spodumene is becoming less important a source of lithium due to the emergence of alkaline brine lake sources in China and Argentina, which produce lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide directly.
