Chrysocolla has a blue-green color and is a minor ore of copper, having a hardness of 2.5 to 3.5.

It is of secondary origin and forms in the oxidation zones of copper ore bodies. Associated minerals are quartz, limonite, azurite, malachite, cuprite, and other secondary copper minerals.

It is typically found as botryoidal or rounded masses and crusts, or vein fillings. Because of its light color, it is sometimes confused with turquoise.

Notable occurrences include Israel, Democratic Republic of Congo, Chile, Cornwall in England, and Arizona, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Michigan, and Pennsylvania in the United States.

A 2006 study has produced evidence that chrysocolla may be a microscopic mixture of the copper hydroxide mineral spertiniite, amorphous silica and water

Chrysocolla gemstone is quite often confused with turquoise, as it has many of the same visual qualities as turquoise. But it is nothing like turquoise, past the visual standpoint.

For thousands of years, as legend tells it, chrysocolla has been a stone of conciliation and reassurance thought the world.

In ancient Egypt, it was called the 'wise stone' as those who wore it generally came up with clever comprises when it seems and unbearable pass in negotiations. It was also thought it would protect the wearer against psychological damage as well. Lore also tells that this stone had the power to make more violent people more sensitive and tolerant, which is apparently why Cleopatra carried chrysocolla with her everywhere she went.

This gemstone is rarely minded today, which is what creates its high price tag.

The name chrysocolla comes from the Greek words ‘chrysos’ which means gold and ‘kola’ meaning glue. Because in ancient times it was used by smiths as a solder when they were crafting gold jewelry.

Supposedly chrysocolla was first mined in the legendary mines of King Solomon. In ancient Egypt it was known as a wisdom stone.

Legend has it that Cleopatra carried a piece with her at all times. The main reason for this was the stone has a calming effect and boosts creativity.

Which was certainly a very useful ability when dealing with diplomats and rulers of the powerful nations that surrounded Egypt at the time. It allowed her to come up with clever solutions and compromises that kept her and her people in a powerful position.

Gemstones change their name too

Although this gemstone came into being millions of years ago, it has only been known by the name of morganite for less than a hundred years. To be precise, in fact, since 1911, since before that the gemmological world simply viewed the 'pink beryl' as a variety of beryl, not as a gemstone in its own right. But it is not only people that change their name. Gemstones sometimes do it too. And so it was that in 1911, on the suggestion of the New York gemmologist G. F. Kunz, the pink variety of beryl was ennobled to the status of a gemstone in its own right. In honour of the banker and mineral collector John Pierpont Morgan, it was given the name under which it is known today: morganite.

Most gem buyers are well acquainted with the most famous members of the beryl family -- emerald and aquamarine. Some are also familiar with the salmon pink beryl known as morganite (after the American banker and gem collector, J.P. Morgan). But there is a lesser known member of the beryl family which is actually the most available and affordable: golden beryl.

The first major deposit of the yellow golden beryl was found in Namibia in 1913 by a German mining company. They named it heliodor from the Greek for "gift from the sun," and hired a famous designer, Lucas von Cranach, to create a fabulous set of jewelry for Kaiser Wilhem II of Germany and his wife. Heliodor gained international fame as a result, but it proved to be shortlived as the war intervened. Heliodor was soon forgotten.

Additional deposits of golden beryl have been discovered in Brazil and Madagascar and these gems are now widely available. They tend to have excellent clarity and can often be found in larger sizes. The use of the term "heliodor" seems to have declined somewhat, and there is in fact some disagreement over the uses of the terms "heliodor" and "golden beryl."

According to one well-known gemological reference (Walter Schumann, Gemstones of the World), the term heliodor refers to the light yellow-green color of beryl. However, Schumann goes on to note that "since there is no clear distinction possible in the yellow and green-yellow tones in comparison to golden beryl, heliodors are generally rejected as an independent precious beryl variety and rather are counted among the weak-colored golden beryls.

Golden beryl has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, so it is suitable for all kinds of jewelry. Golden beryl colors range from the weak yellow-green of heliodor to lemon-yellow and golden-yellow. The coloring agent is iron.

Golden beryl deposits have been found in Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Probably the largest cut golden beryl in the world is the flawless 2,054 carat stone on display in the Hall of Gems in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

The Greeks believed that heliodor contained the power and warmth of the sun and that it was responsible for the alternation of day and night.  This strong belief is reflected in the name itself, for the Greek meaning of heliodor is "gift of the sun". 

This gemstone was at some point forgotten completely, and only recently rediscovered.

Heliodor is a comforting stone, it assists one in empathizing with others and to feel comfortable doing so.  It is a high energy stone, resonating with the pituitary glands, and aids in spiritual and psychic development.

It is a wonderful stone to wear if you are having difficulty understanding the problems of a close friend or family member.  BY holding the stone in your hand while you are with this person, you may feel their emotional needs and better understand what is upsetting or troubling them.

Colorless beryl is called goshenite. The name originates from Goshen, Massachusetts where it was originally discovered. Since all these color varieties are caused by impurities and pure beryl is colorless, it might be tempting to assume that goshenite is the purest variety of beryl. However, there are several elements that can act as inhibitors to color in beryl and so this assumption may not always be true. The name goshenite has been said to be on its way to extinction and yet it is still commonly used in the gemstone markets. Goshenite is found to some extent in almost all beryl localities. In the past, goshenite was used for manufacturing eyeglasses and lenses owing to its transparency. Nowadays, it is most commonly used for gemstone purposes and also considered as a source of beryllium.

The gem value of goshenite is relatively low. However, goshenite can be colored yellow, green, pink, blue and in intermediate colors by irradiating it with high-energy particles. The resulting color depends on the content of Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Fe, and Co impurities.

The very Rare Gem. Bixbite

There seems to be an on-going dispute over Red Beryl/Bixbite and it's rarity.

In the very early 1900's, a man named Maynard Bixby discovered a new type of crystal in the Violet Topaz Mine, located in the Wah Wah area of the Thomas mountain range in Utah.  Bixby wasn't certain of what he found, so sent a crystal specimen to a geochemist, who reported back that the specimen was, in fact, red Beryl. Mining began for this new gem stone, but the mine yielded only a small amount of rough before it was agreed that it was too costly to continue mining, and the Violet mine closed down permanantly.

Red beryl was first found in the Thomas Range in Juab County Utah, USA in the year 1905. The small crystals were found in a rhyolite host rock and were translucent but rarely gemmy. It wasn't until later in the 1950's that larger, higher quality crystals were discovered in the Wah Wah Mountains of Beaver County. These are the only bixbite crystals suitable for faceting. Currently this is the only area in the world where gem quality red beryl is mined. So, what should you look for in Bixbite?  The most desireable gems are those with a deep pink color, and as clear as possible. Bixbite is a beryl, like emerald, and inclusions are commonplace. A gem over a carat or more is also desirable, but it is unlikely you will find many that big. Bixbite crystals were usually under two carats, which left very small gems after faceting.

The first disput came about when trying to decide what to call this new gem stone. Bixbite, after the discoverer, became the common name. Red Beryl was also used. Red Emerald started being circulated. They were all true, and all reffered to the same gem.

Today, you will find it under all of these names. There never has been an agreement on an 'official' name, so they are all considered correct.

Early on in 2006, the Jewelers Association named Bixbite as the rarest gemstone on earth. This replaced Benitoite as the rarest gem, a standing that Benitoite has held for many years.  Bixbite prices soared, and the amount of gem available became scarce.  News of a new source of Bixbite in Madagascar proved to be wrong. There was a gem being mined there, but it's chemical composition was slightly different. This new gem contained Lithium, which Bixbite doesn't have. Also, the new gem's crystals grew in a different formation. This was NOT a new source for Bixbite, but something altogether new. The new gem became known as Pezzottaite. It is very similar to Bixbite in appearance, but a trained gemologist can tell the difference. The refractive index is different, as is the density and specific gravity of the stone.

Although Pezzottaite is a rare gem, it is nowhere near as rare as Bixbite. There has been a new mine found in Afghanistan for Pezzottaite, and the amount of rough mined to date far exceeds the amount of Bixbite ever mined. The crystals of Pezzottaite are much larger, and in many cases much clearer, yielding a bigger and better quality of gem. When buying a gem stone, be sure that you are indeed buying Bixbit, or red Beryl. Those gems listed as "New Red Beryl" are, in fact, Pezzottaite.

Be careful who you buy Bixbite from. Buy from only reputable dealers, preferably one you know. Because the price and value of this gem has skyrocketed, some sellers may try to sell you a 'fake' Bixbite, or mislead you into believing you are buying Bixbite. If buying a gem that has inclusions that have broken the surface of the stone, make sure that the dealer is very reputable.  There have been stones found that were altered by having glass and dye injected into these surface inclusions to make the gem appear darker or clearer than it truly was

Bixbite (or red beryl) is the red color variety of the beryl family of minerals. This gemstone gets its rich red coloring form the traces of manganese added to the basic beryl mineral formula. Bixbite is generally quite rare and is usually very small in size due it's scarcity and small stature of the crystals. It is generally heavily included, perfectly clean gems are extremely rare.

Beryl develops in pegmatites and certain metamorphic rocks. It occurs with quartz, microcline, and muscovite in pegmatites, and with quartz, muscovite, and almandine in schist of regional metamorphic rocks.

Bixbite or red beryl as it is commonly known, is a stone of soothing and healing. It is used by intuitives and mystics to bring harmony to relationships and to enhance compatibility. It is also said to assist in healing grief and depression. As well it is often used to enhance creative energy.

Intuitive sources state that physically bixbite is good for healing problems associated with the physical heart, liver, lungs, mouth, throat, stomach, physical energy level, and digestive system.

The gemstone Aquamarine is the modern March birthstone as adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. It is also the birth stone for the Zodiac sign of Scorpio.  Modern Birthstone for the Month of March but  it is an ancient birthstone in many cultures for the month of October.

Stone of Taurus according to some, due to the fact that aquamarine (and the entire beryl family) are of hexagonal (six-sided) crystalline form, and six is a number belonging to Venus.  Others say it is connect with Gemini, Pisces and Aries.

Some gemstones are heated to high temperatures to enhance the color and/or clarity of a stone. Aquamarines are often heat treated to change a blue-green or teal colored stone to a pure blue. This results in a permanent color change.

Everyone admires the green fire of emerald and the watery blue charm of aquamarine, but not many realize that they are different colors of the same mineral: beryl. There are other members of the beryl family much less known then their famous cousins. Pink and peach morganite, named after gem collector extraordinaire J.P. Morgan; heliodor, also known as golden beryl; rare red beryl, which is as red as emerald is green; pale green beryl, which is a green version of aquamarine; and colorless beryl, or goshenite, which shows off the brilliance of this gem family.

All the gemstones in the beryl family are brilliant and durable and perfect for jewelry use.

General In geology beryl is a  mineral composed of beryllium aluminium cyclosilicate with the chemical formula Be3Al2(SiO3). Theinformation hexagonal crystals of beryl may be very small or range to several meters in size. Terminated crystals are relatively rare. Pure beryl is colorless, but it is frequently tinted by impurities; possible colors are green, blue, yellow, red, and white.

The name beryl is derived (via Latin: beryllus, Old French: beryl, and Middle English: beril) from Greek  beryllos which referred to a "precious blue-green color-of-sea-water stone" and originated from Prakrit veruliya  and Pali veḷuriya ; veḷiru ; from Sanskrit vaidurya-, which is ultimately of Dravidian origin, maybe from the name of Belur or "Velur" in southern India. The term was later adopted for the mineral beryl more exclusively.The Late Latin word berillus was abbreviated as brill- which produced the Italian word brillare meaning "shine", the French word brille meaning "shine", the Spanish word brillo, also meaning "shine", and the English word brilliance. Beryl of various colors is found most commonly in granitic pegmatites, but also occurs in mica schists in the Ural Mountains, and limestone in Colombia. Beryl is often associated with tin and tungsten ore bodies. Beryl is found in Europe in Norway, Austria, Germany, Sweden (especially morganite), Ireland and Russia, as well as Brazil, Colombia, Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, the United States, and Zambia. U.S. beryl locations are in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Dakota and Utah.

New England's pegmatites have produced some of the largest beryls found, including one massive crystal from the Bumpus Quarry in Albany, Maine with dimensions 5.5 m by 1.2 m (18 ft by 4 ft) with a mass of around 18 metric tons; it is New Hampshire's state mineral. As of 1999, the world's largest known naturally occurring crystal of any mineral is a crystal of beryl from Malakialina, Madagascar, 18 meters long and 3.5 meters in diameter, and weighing 380,000 kilogrammes.

The Beryl family of gemstones are quite popular, not only for their range of color, but also for their high brilliance and excellent hardness of 7.5, making them quite suitable for everyday wear.

The ancient Greeks used the refracting properties of beryl to create the first spectacles known to man. At the time of Nero white or clear beryl was found on the Island of Elba and it was often cut to create eyeglasses.

Beryl originates from Mesopatamia and was worshiped as a magic stone by the ancient Hebrews, as it was believed to strengthen ones belief in God. The modern bible states that one day it will take it's place in the walls of the New Jerusalem.
